The Royal Canadian Navy’s Sub-Lieutenant Jeffrey Delisle was today sentenced to twenty years in jail for espionage on behalf of Russia (or a bit over eighteen years counting time served), and he will have to pay back at least some of the money – CDN$111,000 – he took from GRU, Russian military intelligence, during his over four years of betrayal.
As I’ve said previously, this is one of the most uninteresting, indeed pathetic, spy scandals in recent memory, since Delisle is a pathetic and uninteresting person – screenwriters looking for juicy material with hot sex and cunning intrigue, much less Bondian dash, need look elsewhere – yet its impact on Canadian intelligence is nothing less than devastating, especially to Ottawa’s close spy partnerships with the US, the UK, and Australia.
